Need a stress relief? Let the kids in

Hard-working employees may find that bringing their children into the office every once in a while is a form of self healing.

It would be unprofessional – and most likely prohibited by employers – to bring kids into work on a regular basis, especially during business hours. However, inviting them to visit your office every couple weeks could have its perks.

For starters, it allows your co-workers to get to know your family a little better. It could break the ice between two colleagues who have yet to warm up to each other, and it may even lead to a long-lasting friendship between employees with kids who are around the same age.

Furthermore, by showing a child what you do you for a living, and assuming they have an enthusiastic reaction, you may gain a new appreciation for your work.

Lastly, children have a way of easing tension and putting things in perspective for adults. Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen knows this, and that is why he allows kids in his team's clubhouse following games.

"I can be very very mad. I can be on fire, and I see [a player's] kids … and it's over with," Guillen told the Chicago Tribune. "They lighten up the clubhouse and [put it] in a better mood."

Desk plants can help workers remain less stressed, productive

Finding stress relief in the office can be as simple as placing potted plants at your work desk, a new study indicates.

According to The Daily Mail, a Swedish study revealed that workers who saw more plants at work had less sick days than individuals with limited access to plants. The presence of potted plants helped reduce fatigue, stress, headaches, coughs and dry skin among employees, researchers concluded.

The findings are based on a study of 385 office workers. The team from Norwegian University of Life Sciences discovered a correlation between the number of plants in an employee's work space and their personal health and sick days.

"There could also be a psychological explanation in that people believe plants are healthier and are likely to evaluate their own health more optimistically," said Lisa Bringslimark, an environmental psychology expert.

Another study, conducted by Washington State University researchers, found that potted plants are specifically beneficial to people who did not have a window in their work area. Dr. Virginia Lohr, the lead author of the study, found that participants were 12 percent more productive and less stressed when they worked in environments with plants, compared to individuals who were in plant-less settings.

Dahn Yoga Cares for the Earth looks to educate others in protecting the environment

Education is important for individuals who are looking to achieve a sense of life balance. In an effort to help, Dahn Yoga is offering free classes as part of its "Reach for the Earth!" celebration on Earth Day.

On this holiday, all Dahn Yoga classes will be available to the public at no charge, to educate them on how they can better their community and environment. Not only will these programs help individuals continue to nurture their bodies, but they will also be able to establish a body-and-mind connection that offers an educational experience unlike any other.

In addition to Dahn Yoga community events creating interpersonal connections, they can also help participants educate themselves on to do good things for their environment.

The message of Dahn Yoga is to connect individuals with their world and demonstrate the importance of this self-healing practice. Although it's always important to enrich one's own life, helping the environment allows for all living things to reach full life potential.

Many make common mistakes on resumes

Dahn Yoga basics can help one unite their body and mind, and become a fuller person, and the idea of harmony is also essential when constructing a resume.

U.S. News and World Report recently published an article about some of the ways that job seekers can make sure their resume stands above the rest.

One of the most common mistakes on resumes, according to the news source, is leaving out volunteer work. While this work may have been uncompensated, by omitting it from one's resume a job applicant is missing an opportunity to show the hiring manager what sort of self healing he or she may have accomplished by helping the less fortunate.

In addition, another common mistake that people make is feeling the need to list every position they have ever held, regardless of whether or not it is relevant to the job for which they are applying, according to the news provider.

By keeping one's resume focused and relevant to hiring managers, a job applicant can put themselves in the best position to be hired, and thus become a more harmonious person.

Less Stress, More Meaningful Life

Larry (Bethesda, MD)

Last September I returned to Maryland from a trip to China with daily digestive distress. Suddenly other health problems came up. So, at 60 years of age, I was feeling old. I made the rounds of doctors and alternative health practitioners, but with minimal progress.

Then a friend told me about Dahn Yoga Center in Bethesda. I tried it, felt it made sense, liked it and committed myself to go regularly. I am investing in improving my health for the next 30 years; otherwise I doubt that I will make it in terms of quantity of years or quality of life. I embarked on a routine of hour-long yoga classes (actually they encompass an Asian-wisdom and Western brain-knowledge body-mind-spirit exercise system that is much more than yoga), transforming workshops of many hours or days, and private healing-acceleration sessions. In a matter of months, the results have been positive, bordering on astounding:

The digestive trouble is under control, and without medicine.

Previously unable to walk up Metro escalators without leg pains and hyper breathing, I now take them in stride with hardly breaking a sweat.

Compared to prior hectic three-week business trips to Japan, during a February one I raised my vitality, increased my productivity, lowered my stress, and significantly reduced the debilitating jet lag of two flights half way around the world.

Besides feeling more fit and energetic physically, I am delighted that I have greater calm and clarity to deal with stressful episodes, from traffic jams to bad service to a client complaint.

With family and friends of my generation so often paying the health price of too much stress and too little meaning in their lives, I now see healing of myself as only the stepping-stone of becoming a healer for others. And it all started with the wake-up call of an intestinal disorder in China, six months ago!

Healing ourselves and others

Alberto M. (Texas)

Looking back at my diary I realize I made much progress after the first of the month (January 2001) when watching the candle and doing the exercises seemed so difficult.

February was a month of much frustration and disappointment with myself, but also of much reflection and learning. It opened the door for the progress that followed.

The months of March, April, and May brought clear progress as I was able to watch my candle much more easily and release much more stale energy during the exercises.

During the Dahn Yoga exercises, I started to meditate deeply and have important insights and perceptions that actually materialized a few weeks later.

I also realized, looking back at my diary that I seemed to have a clear energy cycle within the month with low-energy during days 15-20 when I tended to catch colds or sleep badly. I am not sure if this is relevant, but this is usually the period just before the full moon.

Watching the candle helped me much in realizing the negative emotions that keep surfacing. The aggressive attitude of competition has been a frequent issue. Also my insecurities and feelings of inadequacy.

I also realize that insights and good perceptions come from very deep, but I am still mostly surrounded by emotions and thoughts that bury such intuitions and insights which surface only occasionally. I hope that More Than Body will help in dealing with these.

Recently, Alberto shared with me the following:
I have been practicing Dahn Yoga for a little over two years now. I have also taken Initial Awakening, More than Body, and Reintegration. I have also attended Ilchi Lee’s two Healing Chakra Seminars.

I started the program in the old center on Gessner Rd. I was having sleeping problems mostly due to stress and frustration. I walked past the center a couple of times and decided to come in. It started a process of change that went much beyond sleeping which by the way has improved 100%. I am now focusing in on what my vision for the future is and how to actualize it.

Kidney Problems

One of the most dramatic stories I heard was in an interview with Griselda.

Griselda is a really nice person and has great strength of will. She is from Uruguay and cares for her parents. Her father is sick with kidney problems and has been on dialysis. He has recently been hospitalized for kidney failure, which is a very life threatening problem.

Griselda was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease in January of 2001 with her kidneys functioning at only 42% which means she was only one step away from dialysis herself.

She has only been practicing Dahn Yoga for a few months but already her kidney tests have improved from 50% to her last test results which were 78% functioning. All I can say is way to go. When you see Griselda in class she looks like the picture of health so I asked her what she was doing besides the regular exercise classes.

Her description of her routine was, she meditates and she talks to her kidney’s a lot.

I think she thought I would think that as strange, but I understand only too well.

Think about it like this. If we can prove that saying bad things or thinking bad thoughts to ourselves can be translated into hormones and other chemicals which have a bad effect on the body and eventually cause disease, why then can we not believe that saying positive things will have a good effect?

Norman Cousins did it in his book “The Anatomy of an Illness” with laughter. The technique Griselda is using is one that has been practiced in Eastern Medicine for thousands of years. She is also using some acupressure techniques which are self applied.

This technique of self healing was taught to her by the Masters at the Houston Dahn Center, but it takes time and commitment both of which Griselda has the courage and conviction to apply. She is one of my heroes.

Difference in my health

Libby F. (Houston, Texas)

My name is Libby F. I have been coming to the Dahn Yoga Center since January of this year, 2002. The reason I began looking for a yoga center was because I knew major changes in my life had to occur. I was diagnosed with cancer on February 7, 2001. I had a tumor in the muscle of my right thigh which measured 18 centimeters long. My cancer was a Sarcoma, specifically a myxoid lyposarcoma, which is a very rare cancer. A sarcoma consists of 1% of all cancers.

My first treatment was chemo and radiation for five weeks to try to shrink the tumor. Then I had surgery in June, 2001. The tumor was successfully removed from my leg along with one hamstring and muscle from the inside of my leg. From this point, I had to learn to walk again with my right let. Following surgery, I had cheomo again beginning in August and completed in November, 2001.

My cancer survival was obviously a life changing event for me. I knew that changes had to be made in my life style, and one of the major changes was to reduce the stress in my life. I decided I must learn how to meditate and learn how to control and calm my mind. I looked in the yellow pages and found the Dahn Yoga Center which advertised yoga methods. I made an appointment for a session with Instructor Oh on New Year’s Eve of 2001.

Oh took his time explaining the mission of the Dahn Yoga Center and how I could really benefit from the teachings here. I have always been very physical all my life with activities which include aerobics, jogging, water skiing, snow skiing and scuba diving. For the first time in my life I was now physically limited, and I was apprehensive of my ability to do the required exercises. But my goal was to learn to meditate and learn to calm my self. Oh encouraged my by telling me that I would work at my own physical ability, and that everyone here was at their own level, whatever that level might be.

I decided to give this a try, and I am so glad I did. Through the practices here I have learned how to be still and calm my self, and I have learned that energy is around us everywhere. The classes have taught me how to become centered with my energy. The blockages in my body are being released, and this had made a world of difference in my health. I am stronger everyday not only from the healing of my cancer, but also from the energy that I am now aware of in my body. I give a lot of credit to the Dahn Yoga Center for helping in healing my mind and my body.

I look forward to even more positive experiences that will come from my being here. Thank you to the Instructors for your guidance, and thank you to the members for the positive energy you have passed on to me. I believe that to be the best you can be is when you are healed first in your heart and your mind.

Diabetes and heart disease

Dr. Albert F. (Dentist)

I have been going to the Dahn Center for about a year. I am a teaching assistant and am presently attending the Dahn Yoga workshop, which is supplemented by all day sessions with Oh and daily practice. In short, I am into this much farther than I thought I would be. I have always been a seeker, even if I did not always know what I was seeking.

When I came to the Dahn Yoga Center my health had deteriorated to the point were it scared me. I was significantly overweight, out of shape, had developed Diabetes (about 6 years before), and my blood chemistry had changed. Triglycerides were though the roof, blood pressure was up, and I was not controlling my blood sugar. I WAS DEVELOPING A THING CALLED SYNDROME X WHICH MAKES YOU PRONE TO HEART ATTACKS. To make a long story short of the eight predisposing factors to having a heart attack I had seven of them. I was thinking of taking up smoking so I would have a complete set.

Well, since coming to the Dahn Yoga Center I have lost 54 pounds, went from being listed as significantly out of shape to good shape as measured by a tread mill test. The thing that impressed me about that was I do not run. I do my Dahn Yoga practice only. I do ride my bike sometimes. I also could have stayed on the test longer but I had no sense of competition. They had what they needed from the test and I had no compulsion to see how far I could go. My blood sugar is 115 as of this morning and under control, my triglycerides and cholesterol are within normal limits and my blood pressure is 119/ 63 as of this morning.

I still take Diabetes medication (about half of what I was taking) but the difference being my blood sugar is under control and before even with twice the medication it was not under control. I have no delusions about curing my diabetes because once you have it, you have it and the best you can do is control it. I will always wonder how long I would have put off having diabetes if I had started Dahn Yoga practice before I got it. I guess none of us can will ourselves to have a better past than we had. We can only do things in the present to give us a better future.

Being a Dentist is a stressful job or so I am told. I think that and the sedentary life style I was leading were the main causes of my problems. There was a study some years ago by a group of Psychiatrists stating that Dentists had the highest rate of suicide of any of the professions. A follow-up study done by Dentists proved that Psychiatrists had the highest rate of suicide. Using the “watcher” philosophy as a living mediation has allowed me to remove much of the stress from my life. I have not dropped out of society.

As a matter of fact, I get more done with less of the emotional strain I had before. I also find that I make better decisions.

I will be the first to tell you that all of this change was hard work, but important if my body was to heal itself. I was so involved with my own stress and health problems I could not even think of helping someone else. But in healing my body I realized that I had something to offer in helping others. I am reminded of an old Indian poem.

I slept and dreamed of a world of pure joy.
I awoke and found a world of pure service.
I served and in my service found joy.
