For people with psoriasis, yoga meditation supplies include moisturizer, oils

August is Psoriasis Awareness Month, meaning it's a time to learn more about this common and painful skin-and-joint condition – as well as find out about ways that yoga meditation supplies can soothe psoriatic skin.

Psoriasis is an inherited disorder in which the body's immune system overreacts to irritants, causing the skin to grow very fast. What results are thick, scaly, flaking or red patches of epidermis. Sometimes, this autoimmune disorder also affects the joints, causing aches or even full-blown arthritis.

If you have psoriasis, here are some yoga meditation supplies that may help soothe your skin:

- Moisturizer. Before and after a yoga session, apply moisturizer liberally to affected skin. This will keep it plump and prevent cracking and redness. Also, remember to engage in yoga meditation poses that don't overstretch the skin.

- Body oils. These products can also loosen up the skin before a yoga class. Also, try bath oils at night, which help repair irritated areas.

- Water. Drinking plenty of water during yoga helps the skin replenish its moisture levels.

- Sunblock. While a little sun exposure is considered good for psoriatic skin, too much can cause flare-ups. So, when doing yoga outdoors, use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.

Must-have yoga meditation supplies for the summer: Sunscreen and long-sleeved clothes

Now that U.S. heat records are falling left and right, it's important to pay extra attention to your skin this summer. After all, it's the only thing standing between you and the sun's hot, hot rays. That's why, at Dahn Yoga, we recommend including sunscreen, long-sleeved clothing and an umbrella in your warm-weather yoga meditation supplies.

Many people do their meditating indoors, which generally makes the sunblock and parasol unnecessary. But even there, a good, all-natural, cotton-based set of pants and a loose, long-sleeved shirt can help keep your skin cool.

Outdoors, though, you should take every measure to protect your skin from UV rays. The  American Academy of Ophthalmology agrees, which is why it has sponsored July as National UV Safety Month.

Here are some tips from the organization for keeping your skin from burning:

- Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. If you don't, your pain management techniques will be for nothing, since a bad sunburn can be excruciating.

- Keep long sleeves, a hat and an umbrella handy.

- If you have blue, green or gray eyes, consider wearing sunglasses to protect your retinas.

- Avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Yoga meditation supplies need not be expensive

You can purchase the best yoga books, mats, DVDs and uniforms that money can buy, but none of it necessarily makes your mind-body experience any better. That's the message we consistently try to get across at Dahn Yoga: you shouldn't have to shell out in order to bliss out.

A good example of unnecessarily pricey yoga meditation supplies can be found in a new line of yoga clothing released by the apparel company Garnet Hill.

Called the ZinniTM collection, it includes the standard sort of pants, shirts, shorts and wraps that you'd expect these days. Nearly all items are made with synthetic fibers, and many of the top-and-bottom sets have a clingy, restrictive fit.

The company's vice president of merchandising, Joanne M., called the line an "exclusive collection," which is pretty accurate, considering that even a simple pair of ZinniTM pants costs north of $80.

Now, it's certainly fine to wear any kind of clothing you like while doing yoga. However, you don't have to spend a bundle to be comfortable and stylish. Essentially, all you need in order to regulate your body temperature is a good pair of loose, natural-weave pants and a long-sleeved top.

Loose-fitting pants are a vital part of yoga meditation supplies

Sure, you need to wear a certain style of pants into a job interview, at work or in church, but is there any other situation in which a special style of slacks is helpful? There sure is. In holistic mind-body classes, loose-fitting workout pants are an indispensable addition to anyone's yoga meditation supplies.

Just how essential are they? According to the Essex-Middle River Patch, a mini-firestorm of Twitter posts recently followed the suggestion that students at Eastern Technical High School might not be able to wear yoga pants to school.

However, they evidently have not been banned. Instead, the school has merely decided to limit the snugness of such clothing.

"Don't believe everything you read on Twitter," principal Tom Evans told the news source. "We have concerns about tight and form-fitting pants, but yoga pants are allowed at Eastern Tech. It was all just a big misunderstanding."

Of course, there's another good reason that yoga pants should be loose and nonrestrictive: When doing yoga meditation poses, clingy, synthetic clothes can limit a person's comfort and range of motion.

And perhaps more importantly, loose, natural-fiber pants and a long-sleeved top are the best uniform for any yoga enthusiast who wants to maintain a steady body temperature.

Tip: Yoga meditation supplies should not include your cellphone

It's not always easy to figure out the etiquette that comes with a new pursuit. In yoga, for instance, you may come to your first class without much idea of how to behave or what to bring. Rather than reading though an entire yoga books for beginners, though, just follow these simple tips for new practitioners.

1. Talk to your instructor before class. If you have big questions or concerns, now is the time to voice them, instead of during quiet meditation.

2. Turn off your cellphone. Just do it. It will never be a part of your essential yoga meditation supplies. A ringing phone can break everyone's calm.

3. Take off your shoes as you enter the studio. It's good etiquette, and it will relax your feet to get them back in a more natural state.

4. Make friends! You're not just going to yoga class to decompress after a long day, but also to meet other people and make social connections. Don't be an isolationist. Say hi!

5. Be open to new things. Some meditation exercises may seem silly at first, but chances are good that you'll quickly learn to love them.

Yoga meditation supplies company sees dip in sales

For individuals who take yoga meditation for beginners, especially those who don't feel the need to wear trendy workout outfits, a recent news item may be of interest. Reuters has reported that yoga meditation supplies company Lululemon Athletica has seen a precipitous drop in the value of its stock.

The news source stated that in the previous financial quarter, the clothing and apparel chain's shares dipped by 16 percent. Reuters did not speculate why the company's star appears to be in decline.

However, AOL's Daily Finance did. The source noted that a recent rigmarole over tote bags has left the apparel corporation unpopular among many yoga enthusiasts.

Last month, a number of consumers complained about a line of tote bags, released by Lululemon, which had the phrase "Who is John Galt?" emblazoned on the side. This quote comes from Ayn Rand's 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged. The rhetorical question is intended to sum up the author's philosophy, which is one that recommends selfishness above helping others (these are Rand's words).

What may also be at work is the decline in the need for specialized, synthetic yoga wear. Typically, a yoga practitioner needs little more than a loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirt and pants made from natural fibers.

When looking for yoga meditation supplies, skip the mat altogether

Yoga meditation for beginners is often marketed as an activity that requires a few upfront purchases, including clothes, exercise balls and, of course, the ever-present yoga mat. While it's important to be sure you have the necessary yoga meditation supplies, a mat is not a prerequisite for a positive, healing experience.

Consider an article recently published by the Towson Patch, which argued that there are many different yoga mats available for enthusiasts. According to the news source, these items can range from $5 to more than $100, depending on how large your yoga budget is.

The article was less specific about the benefits of mats. However, it did note that these products can be a chore to lug around.

There's a reason that Dahn Yoga instructors recommend dispensing with mats altogether. A mat is not much more comfortable than a bare floor, and it's an unnecessary expense too.

All that matters is getting a simple, basic pair of loose pants and a long-sleeved top. Such clothes can help you regulate your temperature during a long yoga class. Beyond that, your body will take care of the rest.

If holistic exercise is too pricey, skip the unnecessary yoga meditation supplies

While many trendy yoga disciplines have helped popularize the mind-body system lately, it has in some cases been to the detriment of cash-strapped enthusiasts. Certain yoga varieties emphasize buying the right yoga meditation supplies over pursuing mental and physical well-being.

This phenomenon may be one reason why the yoga industry is expected to make billions in 2011. According to an IBISWorld Market Research report, yoga-associated revenues will hit $3.3 billion this year.

However, much of this money has little to do with the honorable tradition of learning – and eventually, teaching – the holistic system. The Bloomberg news organization calculated that the average female enthusiast may spend around $700 per year on yoga clothes, mats and other deluxe gear.

Such expenditures are hardly necessary. The best yoga regimens urge participants to stick to the basics – namely, a loose, long-sleeved shirt and a pair of natural-fiber pants. The rest they can jettison, since it does little more than drain their pocketbook.

Likewise, savvy yoga practitioners can hunt up good deals. Try searching for yoga books online, and purchase meditation DVDs that stick to the essentials rather than dazzling you with celebrity faces.

The basic yoga meditation poses: What you’ll need to get started

So you're starting yoga. Congratulations! Whether you've joined a class at a local community center or purchased a DVD for at-home use, expect good things from this ancient mind-body regimen. For millennia, yoga meditation for beginners has been helping people relax, unwind and center themselves.

Where do you get started? Here's a list of yoga meditation supplies that you may consider collecting prior to getting underway.

1. A mat. While padding is not required, you may find that sitting on a hard floor hurts your backside a bit. Yoga mats come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Don't spend more than you have to on one. Remember: it's padding only.

2. A uniform. Believe it or not, clingy yoga pants and tops can hinder your ability to relax and stay cool during meditation. It's best to stick with a uniform-like set of long pants and a loose, long-sleeved shirt or wrap. Preferably, these should be dyed white and fashioned from light, all-natural fabrics.

3. Initiative. It costs and weighs nothing, but it's essential for success. You'll need more than the right clothes to succeed in yoga. Half the battle is being open to change and transformation – physically, mentally and spiritually.

Yoga meditation techniques may improve chances of conception

Women with fertility problems often look into a wide range of alternative and complementary health options, including herbal supplements, acupuncture and yoga meditation techniques. Though you may not see the connection between using yoga-based mindfulness exercises and improving the odds of conception, scientists do.

According to a pair of recently published studies, regularly engaging in meditative yoga may increase a woman's chances of conceiving a child. This may be a boon for the 7.3 million women who suffer from fertility problems, according to data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

One report, which appeared in the journal PLoS ONE, found that relaxation techniques changed volunteers' gene expression.

Researchers associated with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center asked 38 women of reproductive age to participate in eight weeks of holistic relaxation training. At the end of the study period, the team found that volunteers' cellular metabolism tended to increase, while oxidative damage had lessened over the interval.

These genomic changes may have a positive effect on a woman's chances of conceiving.

No wonder many couples use yoga and meditation to shrug off the pressure of fertility issues. A survey published in the journal Fertility and Sterility found that about one-quarter of all couples who seek fertility care will try complementary and alternative health practices.

The report was based on the observation of more than 400 couples. Over an 18-month period, 22 percent tried acupuncture, 17 percent bought herbal supplements and 6 percent tried yoga or meditation.

One of the benefits of a yoga-based holistic health regimen is that whether or not it changes one's chances of fertility, it can almost always lead to relaxation. Furthermore, you can try a mindfulness routine without purchasing more than a few basic yoga meditation supplies.

Finally, remember that fertility problems and infertility are two different things. Of the 12 percent of American women who have trouble conceiving, only a little more than half are likely to be fully infertile, according to the CDC.
